The Lawn Tennis Association recommends the following sizes:

Fencing Systems
The most common fencing system uses traditional galvanised angle iron uprights, with an on-site painted finish. Galvanised tubular systems, with a special coating, offer more aesthetic value and greater durability and can be fitted with a top rail for additional rigidity. The chain link netting usually consists of a galvanised core, with a green or black plastic coating, but other colours can be chosen. If you prefer, the fencing can be fitted with a low central section along the sides, (with or without a gate), giving a better view from outside the court. It can also feature cut-off corners.

Minimum size – 34.75m x 17.07m (114’ x 56’)

Full size – 36.6m x 18.3m (120’ x 60’)

If you are planning on having a number of courts constructed, the recommended side-run for minimum size courts is 3.05m (10’), with 3.6m (12’) between courts. On full size courts, it is 3.6m (12’) with 4.2m (14’) between.

For recreational tennis, 33.53m x 16.46m (110’ x 54’) is the size that has been adopted for many years and will provide a small cost saving.

Floodlighting
Floodlighting schemes are available with a variety of lamp types and column heights. In certain locations, low lamp mounting height may be essential to obtain planning permission. A retractable or reclinable lighting system is an economical way of providing low level illuminance of about 250 lux for recreational tennis.
Clubs will require a minimum of 400 lux and county level courts, a minimum of 500 lux in the principal playing area.

Tennis Court Orientation
Ideally, an approximate North/South orientation is desirable to avoid the effects of low sun during evening play.

Planning Permission
Planning permission is required if, by constructing your tennis court, you change the use of land, for example, from agricultural use to recreational use. In addition, most Local Authorities require planning permission for permanent fencing over 2m high and some even require it for a change of surface, for instance, from grass to macadam.

Maintenance
All court surfaces should be cared for in line with manufacturer’s recommendations. Most will benefit from occasional pressure washing, but advice should be sought first. Regular removal of leaves and debris from the surface is essential to maintain top condition and any weeds should be treated with a non-oil based weed killer. Heavy objects, such as benches, should not be placed directly onto the surface and appropriate footwear should be worn at all times.
